Oh No... My 1st Sore!

Well, I went over a year without any skin issues.  So, here is my excuse.  Most every time I get in and out of a car or my recliner chair, my pants scoot down under my butt.  I figured if I winched down the draw string of my pants around my waist, they would stay on me.  It worked!  I am so smart...  NOT!  So this is the result.  I got a nasty three inch sore on my right hip directly underneath the waist band of my pants.  I do check my ischials every day, but I never thought to look at my hips.  I can't see my hips because the hardware in my back keeps me from bending and twisting enough to do so.  I only realized it was there when my underwear came off all bloody on the side.  Then I felt my hip and felt a nice deep canyon in my hip and pulled my hand up to find my fingers covered in clotted blood.  Nasty!  Thanks Kel, for coming over and fixing it for me.  I'll keep it dry and change it regularly until it's healed...  And no more draw strings, I guess.

This is the sore on my hip

I've been fighting this stupid sore for almost 6 months now!  I wear a folded up sock beneath the waistband of my pants for padding and to help distribute the pressure evenly.  Every time it heals completely, I take out the sock and a couple days later I notice it coming back.  The original sore has long since been healed, but it seems I have to keep that sock over my hip forever in order to prevent any new issues.  I hardly tie my pants drawstring tightly at all and I never have any issue with my left side, so I guess it's just one of those things.  It's just another reminder to check my skin frequently.

I've been super lucky when it comes to my butt though.  I can sit on my Jay Easy Gel Cushion all day long without doing any pressure releases and not even get pink over my ischials at all.  I don't know how I worked that out, butt it's fine. : )

Jake!  I'm sure.  That looks so painful.  The things you have to remember to do and not do.  I'm glad you are OK.  Keep watching for it to heal ok.

Al is enjoying her cousins Miranda and Ben.

She helped me clean the pantry--did LOTS of washing and drying by hand.  It took the whole day.

Take care, really.  Love, Mom

Oh crap-o-rama!  I finally got over here to check the blogs and I can't believe that.  Looks bad.  But, it also looks like it scabbing up, so should be ok, I guess.  You have so much to consider, things I would never have thought of.

Hmm

this looks serious.

the black on the wound surrounded by the redness and exposure that you have would indicate a staph infection.

They may heal up oh yes but they are notorius for coming back.

you have best get medical attention for that.

I know this blog is old but knowing from what you have said in your post i'll bet it still there being a pain.

pun not intended.

If you do not get this treated soon you are going to be at rish for a blood infection or worse.

judging from the location and style of the wound it appears to be caused not only by pressure but also friction.

note that the skin is gone and the wound is trying to heal itself but there is black.

Black indicates dead skin and must be removed promptly.

Wash with alcohol

i know it will hurt like heck but it must be done.

afterwards follow up with Hydrogen Peroxide

and then apply a gauze pad bandage with medical ointment or cream specially made for these types of wounds. just go to the pharmacy and ask what they have for large cut wounds. be sure to use paper tape to hold it on.

the bandage will allow it to drain and it will soak up most of the infection and such.

be sure to change the gauze pad bandage every day and apply fresh ointmet to the bandage durring changing.

you should see an improvement over a period of 5-7 days.

if not then get your bum over to the hospital and have it properly treated.

I hope i wasn't to late to replying to the blog.

lol

if not maybe you'll learn something.

Jake, Once you get a sore it seems almost impossible to get rid of them. I have had a sore on my but just above my hole since like two weeks after the accident. I'm just over 1.5yrs post. I see a wound care doc almost regularly. Nanakisan had some good advise although living with a wound for this long I would also like to give some words. Of course we don't feel it or else we wouldn't have got them in the first place. So now they don't hurt. Just look bad. Obviously relieving pressure or reducing the friction helps promote healing but something that you might not have thought of is making sure your getting a bunch of protein in your diet. Knock down shakes, bars or just a bunch of eggs tuna and chicken. The docs told me that that is one thing that really helps your body do its thing. There are many different things to use on sores I have probably cycled through them all... haha Their is your traditional gauze. the tape I like best is like fabric style, it seems to stay on the best and is the easiest to use. Because of the constant on and off with the tape its best to use skin prep under the tape to prevent irritation and the tape actually causing the other skin to rip open. It will, it happened to me. under the tape like I said Ive used gauze, different styles of foam (copafoam), calcium alginate, and silver calcium alginate fiber and foam. the silver stuff seems to work the best. I would not change my dressing every day! and find "wound cleaner" alcohol and peroxide should only be used in a pinch, their very abrasive to the new skin growth I have always been told to leave one at least 2 maybe three days. Of course you want to change it if it gets saturated. Please don't think I'm crazy and my advise is bad cause I've had my sore for so long, mine is stubborn! Plus its at an area on my body where it it virtually impossible to not have pressure unless I'm laying on my stomach. Sorry but with kids school and a life you cant really afford to lay on your belly for a month. Skin checks are extremely important! Don't get complacent cause something might bite you in the ass, literally!  And try to see a doc as often as you can bc the wound goes through stages and what may be good for the wound in the beginning wont be good for it later on in the healing process. remember even superman died from an infected wound, with constant nursing attention...

I just read Thomas' blog.... I too am dealing with a sore on my coaxic (sp?). I have been going to a wound clinic and they just told me about having a lot of protein in my diet. I just went out and bought some protein powder to make shakes with. After today, protein is my middle name. I have the doctor takes pictures with my digital so I can see the changes from week to week. I have been fighting the sore for 7 months now. There is a hyperbaric chamber there and we are going to attempt to use it (insurance pending) and see if it works. You have to be dedicated...it is, 5 days a wk, 2 hrs per day, for 8-10 weeks. Keep your fingers crossed that my insurance will approve it!

I have been battling bedsores since I broke and after 2yrs have gotten them under control, it took a good DR. and old tyme medicine. I used a old Civil War remedy! Dakin Solution..Its 1/3 Bleach and 2/3 Sterial Water, it eats or lossens the dead skin cells so that new ones can grow. If you or any1 you know is battling BEDSORES, google it and ask your DR if it might help you. I encourge everyone to consult thier DR before tring this!
